At Cafe OTO 40:13

about

I was very honoured to be offered an invitation by The Dogmatics to join them for the second set of their June 2019 appearance at Cafe OTO, becoming the first guest ever, throughout their twelve-year history, to be extended such an opportunity. I’ve known Kai for over twenty-five years: he was one of the first musicians I met on my initial mid-90s forays to Berlin, primarily in his role as curator of Starship Lemon and as the downstairs neighbour of Burkhard Beins. I’d often hear Kai practising — all hours of the day — whilst carrying my cello up and down the stairs to Burkhard’s apartment. In 2005, when Brian Marley and I were collating material for our book Blocks of Consciousness and the Unbroken Continuum, Chris Abrahams was our point of contact for the chapter on The Necks. Chris and I didn’t meet in person until he attended a 2013 concert by The Sealed Knot at Ausland, again, in Berlin. Soon after there were some initial plans for a Chris Abrahams/Sealed Knot collaboration, which eventually didn’t come to fruition. So this Cafe OTO concert marks the very first occasion that I finally got to play in a concert setting with two dear friends. — Mark Wastell
