about

‘Here in the distance’ was recorded during the first lockdown in the UK. Due to the impossibility of playing and recording at and in the same time and space, in which we would play and respond to each other's playing immediately, our responses were delayed and displaced by the lockdown restrictions. We had to stay, play and record at our homes in London and Cambridge. It was an experiment on how to play and keep “the rules” of free improvisation alive and valid even though not playing at the same time and space. It was this shift towards, what Moore would describe, as a “social composition”.

We have recorded ourselves. Do these recordings stand in for us? Or do they allow us to take place as an ‘us’? Being on the recording (there where we are not) something else becomes possible – and recordings were almost immediately incorporated into music itself, also there where it is not. Utopia? Halim el-Dabh, Pauline Oliveros, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, George Russell, Hendrix, Alice & John Coltrane. Something now here with the recordings.
